ADVOCATE OF THE MONTH
Every month, we will highlight one NCUW Board Member and one Partner Agency Director as our "Advocates of the Month".
These individuals are outstanding members of the Nacogdoches community who excel in the areas of service and advocacy.
NACOGDOCHES COUNTY UNITED WAY
Advocate:
noun: a person who speaks or pleads in support or on behalf of a cause
verb: to support or defend a cause
As the NCUW moves towards the Community Impact Model, part of our purpose and strategy is to partner with other organizations and programs in our community.
Sometimes partnerships don't require volunteer hours or monetary donations, but do require advocacy. Together we can create awareness, petition lawmakers, or rally around causes or projects that will make our community stronger.
John Cannings is the Executive Director of the Solid Foundation Association, an organization that serves at-risk youth in the nacogdoches and surrounding communities by providing assistance in the areas of education, life skills, cultural development, behavior modification and spiritual enlightenment.
"To whom much is given, much is expected. It is not enough to be successful, but to see others empowered as well, especially the at-risk youth in our communities."

"If we choose to live here in this community, then we must contribute to its success...there are so many areas that need help, that is one reason I choose to be a part and contribute what I can to United Way."
-Betty Shin, October Advocate of the Month
